Michael Kutschbach – the master of compilation
Categorising and organising is an indispensable impulse of humanity in its efforts to comprehend, interpret and control the world. Michael Kutschbach takes the opposite approach. He finds forms in the nature and culture around us and combines them with each other, composing something new that has never previously existed. The artist is adept at paring down the borrowed forms to such an extent, combining them and grinding them down, that they seem just familiar to us, but without revealing their origin. This could also be termed (artistic) creation.
The artist applies this structural principle to all media – be it the masterly graphite drawing, the wall drawing, the sculpture or even the digitally created image (and thus of course the video as well). At home in all art media, Kutschbach is an expert at using them to develop his own formal languages that, once seen, linger in the memory.
