Nataly Hocke – Geschichten ohne Anfang und Ende

Nataly Hocke is adept at chains of associations. From even the most insignificant item found by chance or small object-like relic of her own biography – all it takes, for example, is a glass that has been smashed for whatever reason – she is able to spin a tale and to charge the object with meaning that is nourished by contextual links with one or more other items.

Her objects are touching. They make our hearts and minds dream up stories that might have happened, but certainly didn’t. There’s no beginning and no end. But there is a visual poetry in her works which, due to the choice of material, its current state (or its artistic elevation to this state) and the composition, coalesce into a wall object that is touching, and yet remains itself.
In 2012, Hocke was given the opportunity to transform several rooms at the Museum Villa Rot into a temporary gesamtkunstwerk. She was allowed to make use of the collection exhibits and combine them in dialogue with individual works of her own to create room installations. Hocke’s unwritten stories were a common thread that brought new life to some of the rooms. In a dreamlike, yet precise manner, she creates her compositions that allow the small to become a whole within the large. Creating a visually balanced, visually poised frame using unequal frame limbs is a challenge that sculptor Hocke masters with bravura. This may serve as a metaphor for her work, for it is not only chains of associations of untold stories, but precise visual choices that the artist makes and shapes into contexts charged with suspense.
