Rule & Freedom - Order & Chaos
Abstraction is the great theme of the artist Dave Grossmann. In every respect, whether it is conceptual or structural in nature, that is, in intellectual terms*, or materializes in the process of creation itself. The various groups of works attest to this.
The current group, the drawing series IN SHAPE and the outstanding artist book of the same name and the autonomous artworks derived from it in various techniques and materials summarizes this attitude of Rule & Freedom well. IN SHAPE is also the current exhibition in February 2023.
Man vs. machine, set of rules vs. chance, order vs. freedom/chaos. In other words, both together generate as an indispensable pair of destinies so far the charm of his artistic work. The last exhibition SEMI COLLAPSE 2020/2021 has already demonstrated this well.
* Dave Grossmann's sovereign image-making is an autonomous response to the wealth of experience he has acquired and refined as a thinker, founder, editor and designer of the impressively designed magazine KWER – MAGAZIN der Abstraktion (zusammen mit Hartmut Friedrich) erworben und verfeinert hat. Dies gilt aber auch für sein ‘erstes Leben’ als urban-zeitgenössischer Tänzer, der früh in seiner Jugend schon lernte, den Raum dynamisch und kompositionell zu durchmessen und spannende Bewegungsfiguren zu kreieren; auch hier gab es schon das Wechselspiel zwischen introvertierter Kontemplation und extrovertierter Energie, zwischen selbstgestelltem Regelwerk und den kontrastierenden tänzerischen Freiheiten. So wie das Leben ist.
