Ursula Sax @ Paper Positions Berlin 2023

Portfolio

Ursula Sax has made a statement about her art with her individual stand.
The two large untitled sculptural discs made of paper (diameter each approx. 135 cm x approx. 8 cm or approx. 17 cm) bear witness to her sculptural power and vision. As early as the 1980s, the artist embraced paper (along with textile) as a sculptural material, defining it as equal to her bronzes, iron, wood, and ceramic sculptures. The art market and the reception in contemporary art history were still completely underdeveloped at that time. Even today, it is difficult to appreciate the material paper in its dignity, vulnerability, but also power.

That is why the awarding of the Golden Paper Art Award, donated by the House of Paper, to their work in connection with the joint and courageous presentation at Paper Positions Berlin is a forward-looking and courageous decision.

Just as the struggle of photography as an equal discipline within the art world has been fought for decades, and now finally stands on equal footing, the struggle for the recognition of paper as a sculptural material beyond its function as a medium for drawings and watercolors is not yet over.
